According to The Heritage of Wise Co. and The City of Norton 1856-1993 Vol I Wise Co. Historical Society.: their home was located on Grassy Gap 6 miles northwest of Wise, a half a mile south of Big Laurel. Description: Story and a half hewn log house, lean too kitchen in the back, faced SW, with a clapboard roof, porch in front and a chimney at the north end. They came Rocky Fork about 1830. Both are buried in the Gardner Cemetery on Guest River. Arthur and Nancy had 12 children; Parker, James H, William Morgan, Elizabeth, Sarah, Catherine, Julia Ann, John, Clarinda, Samuel, Marion and Nancy Ellen.
Arthur Wheatley was born about 1806 in either Tennessee, or in Scott Co. Va. He is listed as being born in Tennessee in the 1850 Russell Co. Va census. In the 1830 Scott Co. Va census, I found a William Wheatley, but he didn't have a free white male age 20-30 in his household. Arthur would have been about 24 years old in 1830. I found a Betsy Wheatley in the 1830 Scott Co. census who did have a free white male age 20-30 in her household. She might be his mother or some other relative. There weren't any Wheatley's in the 1830 Tennessee census index so Arthur's parents must have lived in Scott Co. at the time. Arthur married Nancy Salyers in 1833. I descend through their oldest son, Parker Wheatley. Parker Wheatley married Nancy Ritchie in Russell Co. Va in 1854. Parker served in the Union Army in the Civil War and died in the Battle of Crane's Nest in Wise Co. Va in November, 1863. I read that Arthur died in Wise Co. in 1898

The Arthur Wheatley Home
Location: In Grassy Gap; six miles northwest of Wise; half-mile south of Big Laurel.
Date: About 1830.
Owners: Arthur Wheatley; Frank Kilgore; Campbell Gardner.
Description: Story and half hewn log house. Lean-to kitchen at back. Faced southwest. Clapboard roof. Porch in front. Chimney at north end. Window in the south end.
History: Arthur (Arter) Wheatley was son of William Wheatley and a brother of John (Jackie) Wheatley who settled on Grassy Branch two miles east of Grassy Gap. He was born in Scott Co., VA and married a daughter
of Samuel Salyer. Came to Rocky Fork about 1830 and settled in Grassy Gap. His daughter, Clarinda, married Frank Kilgore and inherited the home place. After the marriage of his daughter, Clarinda, Arter Wheatley moved to near Rock Switch and settled on what is now known as Wheatley Branch. The Kilgores built a new house just south of the original settlement on Poor House Branch, in 1874, and have since resided there.
