- There were 3 Edmund DILLARD's living in Gwinnett County, GA in 1830, along with several other DILLARD's in the immediate area. I am including relevant pieces of an e-mail to Howard V. Jones that may shed some light on the Edmund DILLARD's in GA. This starts in 1790 in Fairfield County, SC and goes through 1840 in Gwinnett County, GA.
Fairfield District, South Carolina 1790
James and Edmund Dillard are 2 of 4 DILLARD's in the entire state. My assumption is James is the son of Thomas, Sr. and Edmund is the son of James. I think this is solid information. Edmund is shown as less than 16 years old in his own household. I think this is incorrect. I have him born between 1755 and 1760 based on 1800 and 1830 Census.
James children: 2 sons born before 1774; 1 son/grandson 1774 - 1790; 5
females
Edmund and wife only with Edmund about 30 to 35 years old.
Fairfield District, South Carolina 1800
Edmund is now 40 to 45 & has children: 3 sons 1790 - 1800; 1 son 1784 - 1790; 1 daughter 1790 - 1800; 1 daughter/sister-in-law(?) 1774 - 1784; wife 1755 - 1774.
Fairfield District, South Carolina 1810
Edmund is now the only Dillard living in Fairfield. No other Edmund DILLARD's in SC at this point.
Fairfield District, South Carolina 1820
By 1820, 3 DILLARD's are in Fairfield, SC. All three enumerated on same page (p. 149) of the Census. Index indicates Edward is oldest of these 3 (but the name is probably Edmund as appears on actual handwritten copy) born before 1775. William born 1775 - 1794 and Thomas born 1794 - 1804. Instead of father and son, could William and Thomas be brothers?
Children:
Edmund: 2 sons 1804 - 1810; 2 sons 1794 - 1804; 2 daughters 1810 - 1820; 1 daughter 1804 - 1810; 1 daughter 1794 - 1804; wife before 1775
William: 3 sons 1810 - 1820; 1 son 1802 - 1804; 1 son 1794 - 1804; wife 1775 - 1794
Thomas: 1 son 1810 - 1820 (Samuel); 1 daughter 1810 - 1820; wife 1794 - 1804 (Millie Ann Stone Dillard)
Gwinnett County, Georgia 1830
Not sure where the DILLARD's went directly after SC, but Thomas (b. 1795) was in GA by 1822 as his son Moses was born in GA in 1822. I think they may have stopped in Elbert County for a few years. By 1830, they were in Gwinnett County near Old Omer Church. The oldest Dillard in the area was Edmund born 1750 to 1760. Near him was a Thomas Dillard (not the one married Millie Ann Stone) who was born 1790 - 1800.
In the same general area are: Edmund, Sr. b. 1770 - 1780; Thomas b. 1790 - 1800; Edmund b. 1800-1810; James b. 1800-1810. This is Thomas who married Millie Ann Stone and buried at Old Omer as evidenced by consistent neighbors throughout the Census records. Thomas is living next to Edmund, Sr. (1770-1780) which suggests that Edmund, Sr. may be his father, the ages certainly match. James (b. 1800 - 1810) and Edmund (b. 1800-1810) are also probably sons of Edmund, Sr. (1770-1780). This is the controversial point!
The Edmund, Sr. (1770-1780) is probably really Edmund, Jr. and Edmund (1755-1760), son of James, would be Edmund, Sr. The youngest Edmund would then be Edmund, III (1800-1810). Some of the ages of the Edmunds do not match, but with 3 different Edmunds living in the same general area, and all being three generations apart, with one distinguished as Sr., suggests to me close kinship.
I hope this isn't too much to digest at once, but I have to believe that the Edmunds are linked. Do you know where your Washington County, GA DILLARD's came from? How do they tie to SC or VA DILLARD's?
