- ALFRED BATES TINKER '31cl died January 21 in Toms River, N.J. He was an investment counselor and former owner of Horizons Motel, in Truro, Mass. He was a mountaineer in his youth, a lifelong sailor, and a noted amateur geologist. He leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Wendt and Marsha Siegel, and three sons, Alfred, Martin, and William; his wife, Elizabeth (Bowman), died in 1977.

Alfred Tinker Sr., 91, formerly of North Truro, died Jan. 21 in Tom's River, N.J. due to complications from the flu.
Mr. Tinker was born in Ithaca, N.Y. to the late Dr. and Mrs. Martin Tinker. His father was professor of surgery at Cornell University.
Mr. Tinker attended Ithaca High School and Lake Forest University before graduating from Harvard with a degree in geology. An accomplished sailor and mountain climber, he spent the summers of his youth sailing on Cape Cod Bay and climbing mountains in Europe. He was especially proud of having climbed the Matterhorn in Switzerland.
During the 1940s Mr. Tinker worked for the U.S. State Dept. and later for financial institutions such as Investors Diversified Services (IDS) before he built and ran Horizons Motel on Beach Point.
He was married to Elizabeth (Bowman) Tinker and is survived by five children: Betsy Wendt of Chicago, Ill., Alfred Tinker Jr. of Tom's River, N.J., Marsha Seigel of Tom's River, N.J., and William and Martin Tinker of Truro, Mass.; as well as 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
